Billy William Charles Solomon (Billy) was born on August 8, 1943 in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of Mildred and Walter Solomon, and died March 11, 2009 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is survived by a sister, Ellen Rachel Solomon of Gloucester, Massachusetts, a son, Demian Solomon of San Anselmo, California and his companion, Marion Lampert of Utrecht. He was preceded in death in 2004 by a younger sister, Barbara Rose Solomon.
As a student at Emory University, Billy participated in the early years of the civil rights movement, and later studied the impact of prejudice on internalized negative feelings with Dr. David Wdowinski at the New School for Social Research in New York. Billy worked as a poet, cabinetmaker, psychotherapist, ski instructor and mountaineer. His most pleasurable ascents were the north face route of Le Italian Couloir on La Grande Casse and the American Direct route on the western face of Le Petit Dru in Chamonix. In Tignes, France, Billy created and gave skiing and mountaineering courses based on the transformation of fear. After a serious mountaineering accident in 1988, he renewed his psychotherapy practice in Amsterdam. Billy's ashes will be spread in the National Park Vanoise in the French Alps.
