When Leah Schulman was born on May 13, 1898, in Livingston, Alabama, her father, Max, was 30, and her mother, Bertha, was 21. She married Louis Eliel Blumberg on June 8th, 1922, and they had two children together: Marjorie and Herbert. She then married Joseph B Kohen on January 22, 1969, in Portsmouth, Virginia. She died on September 12, 1989, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 91.

Leah graduated as a music major from Livingston (Ala) University in 1915. Her wedding in Livingston to Louis Blumberg of Chattanooga is still recalled as a gala affair in Livingston. During their children's teen years, the family lived in Roanoke, Va. Later, Leah and Louis moved to Dalton, Ga where they owned a jewelry store.
